Housing Challenges Require Mix of Solutions

The Teton County Republican Party recently took an informal survey of community priorities. Over 160 Teton County residents responded and shared with us their thoughts on a number of important issues facing our community, state and nation. From housing and traffic in Teton County, to addressing Wyoming's unprecedented funding deficit in Cheyenne, you shared your ideas and priorities with us.

When asked what you believed were some of the solutions that could help address Teton County's housing shortage, speeding up and simplifying town/county processes for building housing and allowing for more density in appropriate areas received the most support.

Survey participants were asked to choose the following options that they thought could help alleviate our housing shortage. The top vote-getters were:

  1. Speeding up & simplifying town/county processes for building housing: 68% supported

  2. Allowing for more density in appropriate areas: 56% supported

  3. Incentivizing construction of apartments & workforce housing: 54% supported

  4. Increasing height restrictions: 41% supported

  5. Increasing housing requirements from private sector: 22% supported

  6. Increasing funding of public housing agencies: 6% supported

Other ideas that were mentioned included building housing in neighboring communities, curbing commercial growth and exploring public-private partnerships.

Please remember, this is not a scientific poll, but, instead, a chance to gain insight into some of the perspectives and priorities of our fellow community members.

Engage 2017 is a Town and County Planning initiative to get public feedback on updates to workforce housing, natural resource, parking and Town character regulations. These updates are part of a large-scale effort to implement the 2012 Comprehensive Plan.

Today, Monday, October 30, there will be a Joint Town Council & Board of County Commissioners Meeting on Housing Requirements and Housing Rules & Regulations at 5:00 pm at the Town Hall.
Elected officials will consider alternatives and develop a draft policy direction for housing mitigation requirements.

As the town and county work to update and implement these regulations, they are asking for your input. Be sure to get involved and follow this public process online at engage2017.jacksontetonplan.com.
